about philanoma

WHO WE ARE

PhilaNOMA is the Philadelphia chapter of The National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA).  NOMA was established in 1971 to champion diversity within the architecture profession and the urban community at large. Similarly, PhilaNOMA was formed in 1993 to provide a voice for design professionals who previously had little say in the development of Philadelphia's communities. PhilaNOMA is committed to enhancing the profession of architecture by promoting diversity in practice and by maintaining an active role in the education of aspiring designers.  Our organization also promotes environmental stewardship in Philadelphia and seeks to make an impact on urban communities through greater awareness and appreciation for architecture and design.  We accomplish this in part through various programs and initiatives that provide networking, community service and mentoring opportunities to professionals and students of all cultures and backgrounds.

SERVING THE PROFESSION

PhilaNOMA works to provide examples of the talent and quality of minority designers by educating practitioners and the public alike to the contributions of Abele, Williams, Whitley, Stanley, Robinson, Massiah and other past and present minority architectural super-powers.  For interested professionals, seminars on design, construction, technology and practice are delivered throughout the year, equipping them to better face new challenges in an evolving business climate. In addition, regular forums and roundtable discussions are conducted regarding social, political and cultural issues that are of interest to the urban design professional. These efforts help to ensure diversity in practice and increase the pool of qualified design professionals to serve the urban community.

SERVING THE COMMUNITY

Every PhilaNOMA program that creates a better design professional helps to create a better community. Our tradition of service continues to expand through active participation and representation in community related organizations for positive change in our neighborhoods. PhilaNOMA is also a supporter of the Charter High School for Architecture and Design (CHAD), as well as many other local design organizations and initiatives. PhilaNOMA is also committed to the education of young aspiring designers. This is exemplified in our Architecture discovery summer camp for 7th through 9th grade students(C.A.M.P. Sustain.Ability).  We also carry out our educational mission through our support of local schools, outreach to university design programs, participation in career day events and mentoring activities throughout the year.
