ARE Boot Camp

In 2016, PhilaNOMA inaugurated the ARE Boot Camp. The Cohort met every Wednesday in a local office to review ARE 4.0 materials. It was Taught by licensed members Cappy Sabir and Kenneth Johnson. The section order and pace was set by the exam takers, allowing for a customizeable study process. It will resume in Spring 2017 to include ARE 5.0 material.

Community Engagement

PhilaNOMA's dedication to the local community is evident in our programming. Through our annual MLK Day of Service we have worked with local churches and community groups around critical needs in their spaces. In 2012, PhilaNOMA contributed pro bono design towards the development of the Logan Parklet. Our 2013 initiative assisted the Community Design Collaborative for a design grant to the New Africa Center. As the 2014 Legacy Project during the Philadelphia Convention, we partnered with Lighthouse and Temple University for the redesign of a community garden space. For 2015 we partnered with Girl Scouts and US2020 on STEM initiatives in the Philadelphia region. In 2016, we partnered with AIA Philadelphia and AIAS for their Legacy Project hosting students from CHAD, West Philadelphia HS, and the ACE Mentor Program for a day of Mentorship. We are gearing up for more!

PhilaNOMA on the Road

Creativity and design drive the world and PhilaNOMA like to get out and see it. Field trips happen both locally and to regional attractions. In the past we have visited The Philadelphia Art Museum, PAFA, and done a Mural Arts tour of Philly. We have attended local conferences for NOMA, AIA, Design Philadelphia, Green Build, DVGBC, and the Preservation Alliance.

In 2016, we sponsored a bus to the grand opening of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. Come join us on the road!

Guest Speakers

Hearing the voices of other architects and designers inspires us all. PhilaNOMA looks to bring speakers who can educate our membership on their practice, technical advances in the field, or social/cultural/political topics. Featured speakers have included Kenny Gamble, Paolo Moya, Kathy Dixon, Michael Ford- the Hip Hop Architect, Phil Freelon, and Frances Kere.
